Danish composer and producer

When Hans Sydow (b. 1968) composed Frøken Urørlig (Miss Sacrosanct) on the Brødrene Gedicht-cd (The Gedicht Brothers), he recorded the old upright piano of his parents-in-law in Odder, Jutland, on a dictaphone. It had an atmosphere, an authenticity he liked, and it survived all the way through to the finished song.
“I am just as much a producer as a composer, and I am already into the production while I write the music,” Hans Sydow says. He does not think that the perfect recording is always the best one, and this time he thought that the clattering and hissing in his old dictaphone suited the atmosphere in his song the best.

In Hans Sydow’s world, it is all about music in its widest sense, about all sound as music – around us, in the surroundings, between us, in the language.
Hans Sydow operates in the field between acoustically performed and computer edited music, between pop and avant-garde, between the sung and the spoken word. It has led  to interpretations of Tom Kristensen’s and H.C. Andersen's poems on the cd's Glimtvis (By Glimpses) and Rimedjævelen (The devil that Rhymes), to the before mentioned Brødrene Gedicht, a cd on which the national bigwigs Povl Dissing and Rune T. Kidde were musically convened, and to Dada3+ with five Sydow compositions, amongst them a prize-winning titlecut.

Among his recent compositions are a electroacoustic Mass Mannakorn,  the so-called experience church service Idas Bibel (Ida’s Bible) and the 3D soundinstallation Sagnsymfoni (Mythophonia), which was premiered at The Diapason Sound Art Gallery in New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Roskilde.

Hans Sydow has studied horn, organ, music theory, music history and composition. Besides his work as a composer and producer he teaches at the  Academy of Music, Esbjerg.

Hans Sydow received the three-year grant of the Danish Arts Foundation in 2007. When giving him the grant, the Committee for Music characterized him as an artist who mixes music and poetry, real sounds and the spoken word, pop and avant-garde into unique musical works, which gives a new view upon the liturgy of the church service, or the old west Danish town, where the pupils in one of his school projects live.
