Danish composer and performer
In august 2005 Thomas Sandberg (b. 1967) performed on a new building created by the Iraque architect Zaha Hadid at the museum Ordrupgaard north of Copenhagen, Denmark. He has often created pieces, where he only played on the room itself: Walls, windows, doors, seats, the floor. Quite often he integrates the sounds from the audience as well.
Thomas Sandberg is educated as a percussionist at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, but he did not stick to the traditional work as a classical percussionist. Today he calls himself composer, percussionist, actor, producer and singer. “Music and drama is very closely connected in my musical world. Music is an invaluable part of a dramatic piece or a film,” he says.
Thomas Sandberg’s concerts usually consist of compositions, improvisations and physical performance elements. The sound sources are percussion instruments, found objects, voice, body and finally what is found at the concert place. Electroacoustic amplification, computer, synthesizers, samplers and various multiFX units are also used to extend the artistic expression.
Thomas Sandberg is inspired by both avantgarde and popmusic, and improvisation and intuition goes hand in hand with stringent and structural orientated composition. He has composed music for theatres, dance companies, radioplays, and has composed jingles and solo works for percussion.
Whenever it is possible he plays concerts and performances for schoolkids and teenagers, and sometimes he makes artistic and pedagogical projects in schools and kindergartens together with the children.
Thomas Sandberg has received several prizes. Some of these are The Danish Music Critics Prize 1998, Danish Composer Union Prize 2003, Danish Radio Award 2003, and TeaterET Music Theatre Prize 2005.
In 2006 Thomas Sandberg was given the three-year grant of the Danish Arts Foundation to the further development of his work in the interface between score music, acting and performance art, and to the development of his personal music style which communicates with both children and adults alike.
