Composer, DJ and Producer
The sound of Thomas Knak’s music could quite often be mistaken as musical flaws. He is attracted to the sounds of everyday life and he often uses them as an important element in the music. For instance Thomas Knak has used the sound of kitchenware falling on the floor in the process of making music as well as samples from his bathroom. The sounds are filtered and extracted from their context and thus they are unrecognisable in the musical surroundings.
Thomas Knak’s debut album under the name Opiate is called Objects for an Ideal Home (1999). The album received excellent reviews and revealed Thomas Knak’s international potential. The special sound of the debut caught the attention of Icelandic phenomenon and singer Bjørk who requested Thomas Knak's producer skills on her album in proces Vespertine (2001).
The deep and mysterious ways of living spaces seems to be the way to approach Thomas Knak’s music. The album title Objects for an Ideal Home implies it, as well as the British music magazine The Wire noted that the debut album We are… of the trio Future 3 had the resemblence of well heated homes and designer furniture. Future 3 has since become synonymous with the ambient sound of cold Scandinavia. They are characterized with repetetive minimalistic beats and an elegant, almost reserved sound.
Thomas Knak is deconstructing the music like you deconstruct a living room when rearranging. He is emphasizing each element like it was a physical piece of furniture. He investigates the sound with a playful and curious attitude and the musical expression becomes almost avant-gardistic. Thomas Knak is not educated at the academy of music and he does not hold a degree in musiology. But according to himself that is in fact the reason why he is able to create the patchwork sound that he is recognised for.
Thomas Knak has been a member of the Danish electronic music scene since the beginning of the 90’s. At first with the ambient compilations Boredom is Deep and Mysterious and in the internationally aknowledged trio Future 3 / System and in the duo James Bong. Later as Opiate releasing one album, various EP’s for various labels around the world and a compilation collection and more obscure releases. Furthermore Thomas Knak has produced music for films, theatre and even bathrooms.
Today Thomas is also part of People Press Play who searches boundaries between pop and electronica. PPP released their selftitled album through German label, Morr Music. Also Thomas Knak works with German sound artist, Carsten Nicolai, as Opto, concentrating on more reduced and sound art projects.
In 1999 Thomas Knak founded his own record label Hobby Industries where he releases his own music as well as other artists.
Thomas Knak was in 2005 awarded the three year working grant of the Danish Arts Foundation for his tremendous and outstanding career on the Danish electronica scene.
