September 7, 2006

The new international festival Europe @ Patras Festival in Greece is arranged by Patras - the Capital of Culture in 2006, and Denmark will be present when the two internationally acclaimed musicians; percussionist Marilyn Mazur and saxophonist Fredrik Lundin, perform at a concert 12 September. The musical encounter between the two musicians is a new constellation and will be a highly improvised journey through imaginative structures and atmospheres.

Marilyn Mazur is best known for her association with Miles Davis, and has performed with several prominent modern jazz artists. She was born in New York and has lived in Denmark since she was six. She studied classical piano and dance, and switched later to drums and improvised music.
In 1985 Miles Davis hired her as the permanent percussionist of his band. Between 1985 and 1989 Mazur toured with Miles Davis through most of the world. Later she also played with Gil Evans’ Orchestra and Waynes Shorter’s group. Latest Marilyn Mazur has been recording and touring worldwide with the Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek as well as her own groups.

Fredrik Lundin is a well established saxophone and flute player as well as a dedicated composer, arranger and bandleader. Over the years he has played with numerous ensembles on the Scandinavian Jazz scene, and has in recent years been heard with, amongst others, Jan Kaspersen, Bo Stief and Jonas Johansen, as well as in combination with his wife, the singer Trine-Lise Væring.
Frederik Lundin has also been working considerably with electronics and composition including work for theatrical productions. He has explored the borders between jazz and classical music, for instance in the project “The Third Way”. Frederik Lundin’s own groups include the remarkable Nordic band “Basalt” and the large Danish-Swedish-Norwegian band “Frederik Lundin Overdrive” known for their solid and extrovert music with a clear influence from Charles Mingus.

The concert in Patras is supported by the Danish Arts Agency.
