Dacapo´s DVD production of Rued Langgaard´s opera "Antikrist" from 2005 was a huge success. Now the spectacular Danish co-production by the Royal Danish Opera and Danish Broadcasting Corporation can be experienced on SACD.
Rued Langgaard composed over 400 works including 16 impressive symphonies. Antikrist was his most ambitious composition, but it was considered un-performable, when rewritten and rejected three times by the Danish Royal Theatre.
Langgaard calls his opera a “fantasy over the spirit of our time”. His intention is to pillory the modern lifestyle and mentality, to warn against political and moral demagogy and against the spread of self-sufficiency and materialism at the expense of the spiritual values of existence. The opera has little sympathy for society, as it has developed, and the moral is that in the end it is all about the individual in confrontation with God and the eternal values. The opera was premiered in 2002, imaginatively staged in Copenhagen's old Riding School.
The soloists include Sten Byriel, Anne Magrethe Dahl, Poul Elming, Helene Gjerris, Johnny van Hal, Jon Ketilson, John Lundgren, Susanne Resmark and Camilla Nylund. The orchestra and choir is Danish National Symphony Orchestra / DR and the Danish National Choir / DR conducted by Thomas Dausgaard. The cd is released by Dacapo Records.
