Opera in Denmark is flourishing in August and September this year as three new operas are premiered within three weeks. "The Confession" by Niels Marthinsen was premiered by the Danish National Opera, Svend Hvidtfelt Nielsen’s "The Present of Eden" was part of the Festival Week in Aarhus, and Bent Lorentzen’s "Cain and Abel" will be premiered at Takkelloftet in the Copenhagen Opera House in September. Furthermore, The Other Opera has re-launched itself as a new Music Theatre called PLEX.
"The Confession" is Niels Marthinsen’s breakthrough as an opera composer. His opera for nine singers, choir and orchestra was premiered by The Danish National Opera in Århus 19 August. The libretto written by Kerstin Perski is based on a short story by Christian Winther from 1843 but transformed into a psychological drama of today. "The Confession" is about, love, repression, and consequences, and Niels Marthinsen is vividly joggling with different musical styles to create an obliging musical language.
Svend Hvidtfelt Nielsen’s opera "The Present of Eden" based on a text by Svend Åge Madsen is for three singers and chamber orchestra. The opera is a tragic and comic apocalypse about a slim pill, its inventor and the catastrophic adverse effect of the pill. The Present of Eden was premiered by Aarhus Summer Opera 25 August as part of the Aarhus Festival Week.
Bent Lorentzen’s Chamber Opera "Cain and Abel" is the first chamber opera created for Takkelloftet at the Copenhagen opera house. Bent Lorentzen is one of Denmark’s most experienced and exciting opera composers. He has written 13 operas, many of which have been staged abroad. Bent Lorentzen has written the libretto, which is based on the biblical story of the woes and wayward ways of the world’s first family, and how far apart life can lead two brothers. The opera will be premiered 5 September at Takkelloftet. Link to The Royal Danish Theatre.
The audience can also experience musical drama at the newly re-launched Music Theatre PLEX. PLEX will be a meeting place for inter-media and hybrid art, electronica, the newest art music, and interactive art. This year’s upcoming events include everything from performance installations, concerts, audio installations and chat opera. Link to PLEX.
