Per Nørgård received the Sibelius Prize of 100.000 euro by the Finish Wihuri Foundation 9 October. The presentation took place in Finlandia House in Helsingfors. The prize is named after the Jean Sibelius, who received the prize in 1953, when it was established.
The Sibelius Prize is given to a prominent composer who has become internationally known and acknowledged. Per Nørgård is the first Danish composer to receive the prize. Last time it was awarded was in 2003, when Magnus Lindberg received the prize. Previously it has been given to Dmitri Shostakovich, Igor Stravinsky, and Benjamin Britten.
