The flautist Ulla Miilmann’s recording of Ole Schmidt’s Flute Concerto has been nominated for a Grammy in the category Best Instrumental Soloist Performance with Orchestra. The orchestra on the CD is the Danish National Symphony Orchestra/DR, conducted by the composer himself. The CD is released on the Danish label Dacapo Records.
Ulla Miilmann is a solo flautist with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra/DR. She was born in 1972 and has been a solo flautist since 1994. She has previously been awarded the Artists’ Prize of the Danish Music Critics, the Rødovre Music Prize, and the Jacob Gade Grant. The CD with Ole Schmidt’s Flute Concerto is her first as a soloist.
Ole Schmidt was born in 1928. He is one of Denmark’s best known conductors and composers, and has a long succession of works and recordings to his name. The Flute Concerto was composed in 1985, and Ulla Miilmann’s is the first recording of the work.
The American Grammy is awarded once a year. The prize is the recording industry’s counterpart to the film industry’s Oscar and is awarded to music in all genres from pop to country to classical. Four other CDs have been nominated in the same category as Ulla Miilmann, including Brahms’ Piano Concertos with the Brazilian pianist Nelson Freire and two of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concertos with the Norwegian Leif Ove Andsnes as soloist. The winner of the Grammy will be revealed at the awards in Los Angeles on 11th February 2007.
