From January 21 – 25 the music industry trade fair MIDEM takes place for the 41st time, and it will be with Danish participation – including the Danish music industry and showcases.
For the 20th time there will be a common Danish stand: With 100 representatives from 63 Danish music industry companies there is an increase in participation for the second year in a row.
The Danish indie rock band The Broken Beats will perform at a showcase Tuesday January 23 at the fashionable Hotel Martinez at MIDEM’s new ‘Talent Stage’ as part of MIDEM’s ‘Buzz Bands’ programme. The Broken Beats were talent-spotted by MIDEM’s own booker at Music Export Denmark’s 'SPOT On #1' showcase in Paris in November. In addition to this the Danish soul-jazz singer Karina Kappel will be performing at the Danish stand on Sunday 21 and Monday 22 January.
Three years ago, Denmark was the host for the opening of MIDEM, and presented a wide variety of Danish rock and pop acts on the opening night itself, followed on subsequent evenings by a classical music concert and a jazz evening.
The Danish opening night followed after the establishment of the organisation MXD, Music Export Denmark – founded by the Roskilde Festival’s Venue Foundation, DR Danish Broadcasting Corporation and ROSA, Danish Rock Council, later on expanded with IFPI Denmark and DUP, the organisation for the Danish independent record companies. And from 2005 with subsidies by the Danish Ministry of Culture to promote Danish rock and pop music abroad. With the establishment of MXD and the big Danish MIDEM launch 2004 became the year where the international ambitions of the Danish music business gained new strength.
Similar international efforts have subsequently been launched on behalf of Danish jazz and folk music.
Participant fees and support from the Danish Arts Council’s Committee for Music will finance the Danish music industry stand, which will in practical terms be organised by the Danish Arts Agency's Music Centre.
As in previous years, the Danish stand, located in the so-called Riviera section of the festival palace, has been designed by Kvorning Design & Kommunikation. Denmark will be presented under the stand name ’DanishMusic.info’, which is also the name of the new internationally-oriented music portal launched last year by the Danish Arts Agency.
On Saturday 20 – Sunday 21 January, MIDEM 2007 will hold a special conference entitled the MIDEM FORUM, which will deal with the latest developments in music on the Internet and mobile networks. Then, on the evening of Sunday 21 January, it will be the turn of EMI Music Publishing, together with MIDEM, to host the official opening night.
