Per Nørgård's "The Divine Circus" in Germany
Print this page
January 29, 2007

Danish composer Per Nørgård celebrates his 75 years birthday in 2007, and one of the most significant events in 2007 will be Theater Lübeck’s production of Nørgård's opera ”The Divine Circus”. The production is premiered 9 March, and the opera will be performed 7 times. The production is also the German first performance of the opera.

“The Divine Circus” is based on texts by the Swiss schizophrenic artist Adolf Wölfli, who during his lifelong stay at mental hospitals wrote 25.000 pages imaginary self-biography and utopia. Adolf Wölfli has been source of inspiration in a number of Per Nørgård’s works from the 1980’ies: for instance the famous work for choir “Wie Ein Kind” (1980) and Symphony no. 4 “Indischer Roosengaarten und Chineesischer Hexensee” (1980/81).

“The Divine Circus” was world premiered by the Danish National Opera in 1983.
