In January 2004, the Danish national radio station P3 began playing a number by a band that shamelessly mixed English and Danish lyrics in one and the same song. The band was called Nephew, and the song was 'Movieclip'. Nephew appealed very much to the listeners' tastes, and soon all P3 listeners with respect for themselves were singing along to lines like "Så tager jeg ind på Shell / for så gi'r det jo sig selv / and round we go". But who was this new band?

First and foremost, they weren't all that new. Nephew was formed back in 1996 by four musicology students at the University of Aarhus, all of whom shared a love of melodious pop/rock. In 1997 the band took part in the Danish Championships in Rock and reached the semi-finals.  They then recorded a couple of demos which they sent off to music venues and recording companies. While warmly welcomed by the music venues (where they soon became a hot live act), the band's reception was somewhat lukewarm at the recording companies, who showed no interest whatever in signing them.

In 1998, the then bassist, Jonas Juul Jeppesen, left the band and was replaced by Kasper Toustrup.

In 2000, Nephew issued their debut album, 'Swimming Time', on a small Aarhus-based label, Martian Records. The album was well received by both the audience and the critics, and resulted in an even busier gig calendar for the band; Nephew’s gig list for 2000 included Roskilde Festival’s Camp Stage and several venues in Germany.

But despite their success, the band decided to take a break in 2001, as the members had lost their enthusiasm. However, they decided to play a planned concert in Germany, which was to be their farewell gig.  But it didn't turn out that way; at their supposed farewell concert the band rediscovered their passion for the music, and the four guys decided to carry on with Nephew.

At the end of 2001, Nephew began working on material for a new album, and two years later the band sent three numbers to P3, one of which was 'Movieclip'. The radio channel promptly made the song Hit of the Week.

Since then, things have moved fast for Nephew. In April 2004 the band signed a contract with Copenhagen Records, and on 30 June their second album, 'USADSB', was released to immediate sales success; by the end of the year, they could celebrate platinum status with 40,000 copies sold.

At the beginning of 2005, Copenhagen Records re-released Nephew's debut album 'Swimming Time'.  The original recording company, Martian Records, had closed in the meantime, which made 'Swimming Time' hard to obtain for a while – to the great frustration of those of the band's fans who had first discovered the group with 'USADSB'.
