Laura Toxværd

Danish musician and composer

Laura Toxværd (b. 1977) trained at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen, and has also studied in Paris, Ireland, Sweden and Germany.

In 2009, the Danish Arts Foundation's two music committees for classical and rhythmic music jointly awarded Laura Toxværd the three-year working scholarship, to give her time for reflection and to develop her obvious talent.

The committee made the following remarks in connection with the award:

"In her lively musicianship as a saxophonist, Laura Toxværd combines graphic score composition, improvisation, electronic components and sound production in an integrated practice that communicates in an energetically insistent language. Toxværd has published graphic scores since 2003. Her debut CD, Laura Toxværd #1, was released in 2007, and attracted international attention, becoming for example declared one of the best debut albums of the year by AllAboutJazz (New York).

Both in the studio and in live performances, Toxværd's musical nerve manages to encompass references, not only to odd corners of free jazz history, but also to machinery and animal noises in an expression ranging from cabaret-light to heavy-electronica … and all on an alto sax!"
