Under Byen was founded in 1995, and consisted in 2009 of the following eight musicians:
Henriette Sennenvaldt - vocals Rasmus Kjær Larsen - piano, etc. Nils Gröndahl - violin/saw Sara Saxild - bass Stine Sørensen - drums, vocals Morten Larsen - drums Morten Svenstrup - cello Anders Stochholm - this and that
Under Byen was formed in Aarhus, and in 1997 they released the single 'Puma' which presented for the first time the group's atmospheric and dusty universe, reminiscent of such artists as Bjørk, Kate Bush and Talk Talk.
In 2009, the Danish Arts Foundation's Music Committee for Rhythmic Music awarded a three-year working scholarship to the ensemble, with the following remarks:
"For a decade, Under Byen has insisted on pursuing a strangely beautiful and unusual musical expression characterised by strings, percussion and keyboards in close symbiosis with soul-seeking feminine vocals and fine poetry. The ensemble never compromises on quality when collectively producing their atmospheric music. With lengthy acoustic passages and a weaving network of notes, Under Byen invites the listener on a journey which leads both to the core of the mind and out into the unknown.
Today, Under Byen stands like a beacon among a generation of young people who, at the turn of the millennium, reclaimed their mother tongue as the true mouthpiece of emotion. The fact that, despite the group’s adherence to the Danish language, Under Byen has won dedicated fans across large parts of the world says something about the depth of their music.
The ensemble's lyrics and music used to be mainly produced by lead singer Henriette Sennevaldt and the composer Katrine Stochholm, but recently the music has been created in a process in which all eight of the ensemble's members have made equal contributions with their separate personalities, and the group wishes to continue to develop this working method.
Accordingly, the Music Committee has decided to support Under Byen with a three-year working scholarship equally distributed among the ensemble's eight members."
